Solar photovoltaics (PV), also known as solar panel electricity systems, use photovoltaic cells to capture the sun’s energy. They don’t need direct sunlight to work because they can still generate electricity even if it is a cloudy day. Sunlight is converted into electricity via the cells and this can then be used to light your home and run your domestic appliances.
PV cells are created by using layers of semi-conducting materials, typically silicon. When sunlight shines onto the cells it forms an electric field across the layers. The more sunlight that hits the cells the more electricity is produced. These cells are then grouped together into panels or modules and are placed onto your roof. PV cells can be made in various shapes and sizes and the power that they generate is measured into kilowatts peak or kWp. They can be made into panels on your roof or you can opt for solar tiles.
Solar tiles replace your existing roof tiles but they cost twice as much as the panel system. They also don’t work as effectively as the panel systems and most installers will only advise to have this form fitted if planning requires it or for aesthetic reasons.
Costs of installing the systems have fallen greatly in the last year. Also they require very little maintenance once they are installed. The most important thing to do is to make sure that nothing overshadows them, such as trees. They need to be kept quite clean but if they are tilted at 15 degrees or more the rain will do this job for you. The risk of debris on the panels only really affects panels that are ground mounted.
EPC of ‘D’ or above
You will need an Energy Performance Certificate of ‘D’ or above to obtain the higher rate of FiT. We will arrange this for you if you do not have one. Properties with an EPC level below ‘D’ are still eligible for the lower FiT rate of 6.61p.

The panels should last 25 years or more but your inverter may need replacing before this. Solar panel systems are great because solar electricity is green, renewable energy. Your system, once installed, can save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year, which is over 30 tonnes over the systems lifetime.
